How to Buy Motorcycle Insurance

Motorcycle insurance is just like auto insurance - you must have liability coverage, and if you want to protect your bike, you'll want collision and comprehensive too. The only difference is that motorcycle insurance can be more expensive. All that money you're saving on gas could be eaten into by insurance. That's why you need to do your homework and shop around.

Liability Insurance

Every state requires that you have liability insurance for any vehicles that you drive on public roads. Consider getting more than the minimum amount, especially if you have assets or earning power that someone could sue you for in the event of an accident. Most of the cost of insurance is for the lower dollar limits. It often costs relatively little to increase your limits. When you request quotes, ask the insurance company to price it both ways. Just make sure you compare apples to apples when you're looking at quotes from multiple companies.

Make sure you get liability insurance for passengers riding with you. Passenger injuries are the number one source of lawsuits against motorcycle drivers. If you don't get liability insurance for passengers, don't carry passengers. Ever.

Protecting Your Bike

What would happen if you were in an accident and your motorcycle was damaged or destroyed? Could you afford to replace it? Get a quote for collision, comprehensive and uninsured motorist coverage. Weigh the premium price against the value of your motorcycle to determine if it's worth it.

If you have customized your bike, make sure to list the additions on your insurance application so that they'll be covered too.

Lay-Up Periods

Some insurance companies offer lay-up periods. These are periods of time when you are not plannng to ride your bike, so you don't need coverage. For example, if you live in a cold climate, you might not ride your motorcycle in the winter. Lay-up periods can save you money on your premium, but price the insurance with and without a lay-up period. If you do go with the lay-up, don't ever ride during that period, because you won't be covered at all.
